Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) is the nodal Ministry in India to promote e-Governance for empowering citizens, promoting the inclusive and sustainable growth of the Electronics, IT & ITeS industries, enhancing India’s role in Internet Governance, adopting a multipronged approach that includes development of human resources, promoting R&D and innovation, enhancing efficiency through digital services and ensuring a secure cyber space.
It is essential to develop and nurture a multilingual Internet ecosystem in the country so that the majority of the population in India can make the best use of Internet in their own choice of languages/scripts.
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, through National Internet exchange of India (NIXI) has launched IDNs in following 7 scripts covering 15 languages:
- Devenagari script covering 8 languages (i.e. Hindi, Bodo (Boro), Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Marathi, Nepali, Sindhi )
- Gujarati
- Bengali, Manipuri in Bengali script
- Punjabi
- Tamil
- Telugu
- Urdu
BharatBhasha Portal is part of the awareness and outreach initiative by MeitY aimed at raising the overall Universal Acceptance of the Internationalized Domain Names and the Email Addresses.
